I know that the point system was changed but I don't pay much attention.
I'm not a real fan of the system any way's seems like they get points for everything under the sun, hell there's probably a points difference if they use single ply or quilted toilet paper.

The "chase" is only a very very slight improvement. I still don't care much for NASCAR because it's all about consistency and not about winning. Under their current points system, the guy finishing second can get as many points as the guy who won the race  .
Now don't get me wrong, I like the cars (after all they still use a live axle just like my dinosaur), I like some of the drivers, and the little fist fights every now and again are pretty humorous too :D . A change in the points system and I could be a fan. However, in order to get me on board, there would need to be a significant points advantage to actually WINNING THE FREAKING RACE! The second place car getting the same points as first is just plain DUMB (IMHO).
If I were King, after I cured the rest of the country's non-automotive ills  , I would change the NASCAR points system to something along the lines of 100pts for first, 75 for second, 50 for third, 40 for fourth, 30 for fifth, followed by a sliding 5 point reduction for sixth through tenth. Not in the top ten? No points for you! (<--Seinfield humor here)
Under my points system, I guarantee you'd see a heck of a lot more "racing" and battling to win races rather than just riding in circles trying to avoind wrecks and have "consistent finishes".
Anyone remember when Bill Elliott won 11 races in a single season but didn't win the championship? The champion that year (the late Alan Kulwicki, I think??) only won a handful of races, but was more "consistent". This is why I can't get into NASCAR. I want to see balls out racing for the win, not conservative, avoid accidents, and finish consistently crap.

I've gone from hardcore fan to "couldn't care less" over the last 2 or 3 years. Cookie cutter bodies, pushrods...carbs, for heaven's sake...yawn. Re-do the rules to make 'em use the actual body shell as a basis for the race car, add big fender flares and big tires, alllow fuel injection and overhead cams and I'm back...oh, wait, that sounds like World Challenge, on of my favourite series. And the points system - I'm with Jerry and Davis. Of course, I like a good points arguement..................

I only vaguely follow NASCAR because my secretary is a raving Earnhart, Jr. fan. I almost convinced her to watch the Sears Point ALMS race because Junior was in it, until he went en feugo. I really prefer that your turn right, at least a little bit of the time and compete in cars that have something in common with street cars. World Challenge and World Rally, baby!

You want real racing??????????? Not American cars. More of the Uncle Ben's variety. Should check out JGTC (Japanese Grand Touring Championship). They have a 300 and 500 class. Pretty interesting racing.

Ive been following Nascar for as long as I can remember. Alot of things dont make since with it.
What makes dirt racing so fun? Short tracks, bumping, and fights.
Bristol, Martinsville, and other short track are the best to watch because of what going to happen.
I have to defend it a little though. You've got 42-43 drivers running 150-198 or so mph, running bumper to bumper for 200-500 miles. Yet most of the time only have 10 or so cautions. Take your average day on I-64 around Dunbar to Teays Valley (used to drive it daily during work hours) people travel 50-75mph for the most case, how many wrecks are there?
Mike Helton is making too many rules that shouldnt matter. Just like Dale Jr. letting a few words slip out. How many of us would do the same thing if we just one a couple hundred thousand $'s, and possibly a few million?
Now for the points race: Being consistent, making every race, and finishing every race is what wins. I know from reading thats not what everyone thinks but its true. If you have a consistent car from week to week you more less know what to expect and how to drive it. For example, our drag car used to have 5.29 gears, yes it was faster but very inconsistent. Might do good one week and the car be very sporadict the next. Dropped to a 4.56 gear and the car became more consistent which put us at the top more regularly therefore finishing poinst better.
Matt Kenseth last year is what caused the change in the rules and the Chase for the Championship is what evolved. He finished top 5 every week while others might win this week and not finish the next. You gain 15pts one week and lose 35 the next. To me thats not the way to win. Kinda like one step forward and two steps back. But thats just the way I see them.
Does anyone ever watch Australian v8 supercar racing? Thats seems like a pretty good series.
