I have seen where there are several rotax karts that were originally shifters. Is there any advantage to this alteration? Why would this be performed? classing?

Altered for autocross purposes? I believe Rotax is a single speed class. I believe the normal reason to go to a Rotax in sprint karting is because the number of participants in the class is high.

A 125 Rotax or any other TAG motor even the DD2 2 speed Rotax are F125 Legal... and both are nearly as fast as a shifter if not equal... EXCEPT for the start... at the start the shifters will crush the TAG style motors or any other single speed "clutch" kart... There are guys out west who run a modified Briggs in F125 for fun as well..... Best part about a Rotax is they go a long time in between rebuilds... People convert shifter chassis because in many areas the Sprint Race Shifter scene is very small so they put a tag motor on.... remove the front brakes and race in bigger fields
