just changed my piston, ring, and trans fluid. not a bad job at all. only one piston :-)

first things first, spark plug out, measure squish

remove pipe, top head bolts and coolant hose, voila

remove 4 main head bolts, gently rock cylinder off. fine engines and fine women like gentle... sometimes

remove, C clips, slide out wrist pin, take lots of random pics

monitoring the scoring issue on the skirt, i think its either from not enough warm up or something being injested... we'll see.

exhaust bridge looks pretty good. the streak is adjacent to the scoring. no damage to the nikasil.

making sure ring gap is spec'd properly. needed adjusted, so i had to run to martin's and file it for a few seconds. thanks again martin!

trying an aftermarket forged wiseco piston this time. lighter, cheaper and stronger than aftermarket but more prone to stick b/c it's forged and expands more. i had plenty of clearance though in my old cylinder. it's a clone of the RS piston that's $200 vs $130. should also afford some more run time: 3-4 hrs on a ring and 3-4 hrs on a piston. we'll see when power starts falling off.

that's about it. i don't forsee this job taking longer than 30-45 minutes from here on out. it's a crude little machine but it does what it's designed to do...

Schweet!! On the warm up deal... make sure your thermostat is not stuck open. The epic ones are known to do that here or there.

yeah, i need to pull that thermo apart and check it. it get's to 110 fast but takes a little more time to get to 120.

Three base gaskets....lowering compression or changing port timing. Interesting.......

exactly. a common mod after putting in an RS type piston. the original modder used two oem gaskets which are about .025 each. i threw in another .005 to give the forged piston a hair more room for expansion.

Yup.. Base gasket sets the squish and in my case I can use base gaskets to put the combustion chamber volume right at 11cc (the legal limit for my motor) .. Many mod motos use as little as 7cc since they have no minimums to be legal in Solo.... My motor was set up to use the wiseco piston when it was ported.

I still have a lot of reading/learning to do. I love it! A few more events and I'll be tearing mine down for a refresh over the winter.

Sorry... now an OT subject... I may be heading to Circleville on Monday the 12th. No school in Putnam county that day and I really want to get on the track with my kids to teach them a little bit. Anyone is welcome to join.

my book was a hand me down. it's from kartweb.com but i'm not quite sure what manual. i think it's the "CR 125 manual". i'll bring it next sunday and you can have a look. it's a nice manual for sure.
