It started with the death of Henry Surtees, son of F1 Wolrd Champion John Surtees, during an F2 race. He was hit in the head by a tire/wheel that had come loose from another car when it hit the wall, an accident he was otherwise not involved in.

RIP Henry Surtees and condolences to his family.

During Saturday Qualifying for the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix, Felipe Massa went head-on into the tire barrier at around 120mph for seemingly no reason. When the on-board replay was shown in slow-motion, a spring could clearly be seen striking Massa's helmet at the exact same time he seemed to lose consciousness. He was airlifted to a local military hospital, where it was discovered he had two seperate fractures of the skull (one above the right eyebrow, and one at the base of the skull), as well as a concussion, swelling, and multiple lacerations. There's no doubt he'll be out for quite some time, but I sure hope he's ok...his first baby's due in November.

Well here's the video of the Massa accident:

I've seen the Surtees video, too, but won't be posting it out of respect.

...but I will be posting this picture of Felipe Massa to convey how hard the 2lb spring hit at 170mph.

Yikes, that's ugly (thanks for the warning, Troy). News sounds good about his condition, tho'.

In this atmosphere, it's perhaps to be expected that FIA came down hard on Renault for letter Alonso go with a wheel nut loose. Results - no Renault at Valencia (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8169649.stm).

Although, on Speed's website, there's a rumor that Alonso might be there, anyway, replacing Massa at Ferrari.
