View Full Version : Exhaust Removal

Starting at the SCR event today, at which one of the ES Miatae had its exhaust, taken off and was idiotically loud for it, made me go home and look up the stock rule on this. It looks like this:

[13.10] E. Any part of the exhaust system beyond (downstream from) the
header/manifold or catalytic converter, if so equipped, may be
substituted provided the system meets the requirements of 3.5.
Stainless steel heat exchangers are permitted only if the physical
dimensions and configuration remain unchanged.

"may be substituted" to me means something has to go in place of the exhaust you're taking off. Am I wrong?

I don't particularly care about the guys running today, but I'm curious if it comes up at one of our events.

Its not removed, its a turn down that exits behind the driver.

John (Tavolacci) has the same system on its minivan, very simple way of losing a few pounds of dead weight.

Yup, turn downs are allowed... if he was missing the section past the cat then it would be illegal...

So, if you have (just to make the numbers easy) 3 feet of exhaust behind the cat, you can replace it with a 6 inch turn down?

I guess that makes sense, but in some cases it makes "stock" cars stupid loud, IMHO. Of course, I stood right beside that car while it launched (in ways that make Boggess look gentle) 12 times, so maybe I just got fed up with it.

Yep you can have a tiny turn down.

I feel your pain, that Miata was stupid loud and made Boggess and everyone's car sound sane.

I might have a similar noise maker at Elkins, ear plugs will not be supplied.

Must exit behind the driver though, correct? Mark's MR2 (my toy for next year) has one already made up...obviously this piece could be 2 inches long theoretically since the entire engine is bend the driver...

How would the Quicktime exhaust Valves play into this scenario? Would they have the same allowance in the rules?

I thought we required mufflers? I wasn't there, so I'm not complaining about the car in question, I just always thought we required mufflers, especially in stock classes..?

SeanB

Uh mufflers have never been required.

The rules indicate exhaust must exit behind the driver.

JohnnyTavo and I both run turn downs as does Marteen. Phil runs a side dump Supertrapp. It is dead weight that shouldn't be there.

3.5 MUFFLERS
Adequate mufflers are required for Solo events. The criterion of
“adequacy” is not what the exhaust system consists of, but the
sound level. Any car deemed by the Event Chairman or his
designated representative to be excessively loud shall not compete
without acceptable modifications installed on the car.

Well, I guess if your Event Chairman is disrespectful and couldn't care less how annoyed the neighbors become that are within earshot, I guess you're right. I think straight pipes or turndowns on a "stock" vehicle is ridiculous. If you're like Kevin and trailer your stock vehicle to the event, it may not be so bad, but if I see a car out on the road and the only visible modification is an empty exhaust outlet on the bumper, I think he's either poor or a douchebag. Just my two cents. I mean, there are exceptions, like STI's, EVO's, Vettes, etc., but a Civic with no muffler....? [insert limp-wristed smiley]

Then again, this isn't a competition to impress Troy, so if you want to drown out your girlfriend [or boyfriend] with your N/A 1.4L turd, be my guest. My car sucks, too, so I'm no better...

Haha true true, the minivan we'll be out at least once this year with douchebag power enabled. To cover the poor side of the equation, it will be running on rice of course.

with douchebag power enabled.

I'm pretty sure that has to exit behind the driver, too.

Hey Tavo... should we tell these fools about the CRX's um secret addition. Or should be just wait for the next autocross and show them.

P.S. We aren't offering ear plugs, please bring your own.

Haha, that might be tough.

I think we should set acceptable noise limits. They could be different for events like airports, but at the average parking lot, we should not allow 'stupid loud' cars. The region used to have a restriction that mufflers were required. Somehow that was dropped from the Supplemental Regulations. I'll have to bring the subject up again. Unfortunately, to enforce such a rule, we would have to have a db meter.

we do have a sound level meter. I donated on to the club two years ago.

In all seriousness, both John, Philip, Marteen and my car meet sound restrictions. I believe 96 db is the cut off. None of us have been flagged for sound yet.

I hope I do too.....

Ive only been flagged once for my exhaust at a River Cities Event, I was only running a downpipe.. After that, I finished my exhaust. The pissed off tractor should be back for May.

96db at how many feet? Usually sound readings assume 50 feet, but I'm not sure in SCCA. Whatever the footage is, the person recording would be stationary and the vehicle would drive by at the designated distance away and you check the maximum recorded db level.

SeanB

Per SCCA rules:

Measurement will be taken at a point on course where the car can
reasonably be expected to be at full throttle, under load, and at high
RPM.

The measuring point will be 50 ft from the edge of the course lane, using
a coned gate as a reference. More than one measuring point may be
established.

I think heeding Troy's advice may be more important than ensuring everyone meets the 96db limit. Riverside's neighbors or neighboring establishments may not appreciate the poor douchebag's reveille on Sunday morning. We need only to upset one... and God have mercy if any fellow shift-workers reside nearby.

Agreed! I'm in favor of dB limits. Now, if we can just impose some for the Four wheelers and Harleys, all would be right with world.
