Apparently things are very very close (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/65044) to a merger between the IRL and Champ Car. The sticking point appears to be a schedule conflict between the current IRL race in Japan and Long Beach, which would be part of the merged schedule. The CC guys seem pumped:
Newman/Haas/Lanigan co-owner Paul Newman, who was already planning to defect his team to the IRL in 2009, said: "I feel like I died and went to heaven. This is the best news I've heard in a long time."
Veteran Champ Car racer Paul Tracy added: "I think we'd all be happy if we were back together, and the fans would be happy to see all the best drivers in one race.
