I have a friend interested in attending some events. He has a lowered 91 Chevy 1500 that he wants to autocross. It has a worked over motor, 6 speed, etc.
Would he be able to race it? Not really concerned with classing, just whether or not he can participate.
Thanks

Sure he can paricipate... sounds to me the truck would be classed in E-Mod or SM (ask martin if a truck is SM or SM2).. unless that 6 speed is an option on the truck.. then it could run CP or ESP depending on how worked the motor is.. wayyy back when I lived in Lexington KY we had a guy who ran DSP and then E-Mod in a Nissan Truck and he had an absolute blast!!

Well this will also depend on the platform...here is a quick info:
"Unstable vehicles with a high center of gravity and a narrow track,
including SUV’s, minivans, and 4WD pickups, must be excluded
(e.g. Suzuki Samurai, Jeep CJ series, and GEO Tracker/Suzuki
Sidekick). Extra caution should be exercised with non-traditional
vehicles, e.g. trucks using racing slicks."
Also:
"HS: + all RWD pickup trucks NOC
ESP: All American inline 6, V6 and V8 sedans and pick-ups not otherwise classified.
FSP: All 4-cyl and rotary RWD mini-pickups"
These are stolen from sccaforums.com...
I would say SM2 (in case ot's a two-seater) or SM (four seats) would be an apropriate class given the modifications... if it's past SM then I'd say CP or Mod classes... we'll figure it out the event, we might have to look at the rule book a bit closer...
Hope to see your friend at one (or all) of our events!

Is it a Chevy transmission? If so SM2 would be possible. Like Jason said, I've seen some pretty bad ass Dodge/Chevy trucks out there. Hope to see him at the next event, heck if it snows he might just beat all of us.

Drivetrain is free in SM AFAIK...The block has to be from the original manufacturer....any chevy block can be used... tranny, driveshafts, rear ends are all free...

Trans is open, but I was under the impression it had to be from the same make? I mean whats stopping you (Marteen) from throwing a 15k Quaife sequential box other than cost.
Regardless Mike, have your friend come down we'll find him a class. Please remember that the event is contingent on weather, the BOD has a new rule in effect regarding temperature and snow. I will post more details once everything gets finalized and also open registration.

Again, my undestanding is that the drivetrain (including transmission) is open. The only thing that has to be from the same make engine-wise is the block...that's why money really matters in SM and most classes... Actually
X-trac (sp?) Toyota rally seq. transmissions are in the $30,000 dollar range and are known to be problematic so spare parts are a must... so yeah, maybe one day, if we win the lottery, we can hire a professional team and win SM...:f1: Well even then it would not be enough due to lack of mad driving skillz (yo)...heh Then we could hire Daddio and give Bowland bros a run for their money...:partay: For those who don't know Bowland bros' Shark...look it up on google, it's a machine with about 400lbs of downforce at 35 MPH is it Sean, Jason? Something along those amazing lines anyway....

Couldn't use a rally trans, it was never in a production car. I mean if that was the case I'd find a way to shoehorn a F1 engine into my CRX and run SM2. The Bowland car is a beast, you can actually accelerate in turns.

Sean, I think we're not really understanding each other...yes, if the F1 engine has Honda block available for your particular make and model of car then yes, it could be used...doubtfull...heh
Here is a quote from scca rules:
Drivetrain and related components are unrestricted except for the following limitations:
1. Engine block (and only the block) must be a production unit manufactured and badged the same as the original standard or optional engine for that model... otherwise drivetrain (trans, axles, spindles, drive shafts and such) are unrestricted.... makes sense? In the case of my celica, I am using the original 3sgte block...non-3sgte crank, non 3sgte pistons etc...but the block is a production unit...that's what matters... at least as far as my understanding of the rules go...

Sean,
Thinking and reading about the transmission rule some more, no changes have been made so far (AFAIK)...I am sure once someone comes to nationals with an expensive hydraulic sequential "rally type" transmission and wins SM things will change for the sake of cost.... So yes, as of rigtht now one could use a rally trans to compete although it would raise many eyebrows...heh
I know, SM is scary, lots of loopholes open...

Ok, I am the friend that is interested in wanting to run my truck, I'll give you the low down on the truck. It's a 1991 Chevrolet Silverado, Extended Cab Short Bed, 357 with Edelbrock Aluminum heads, Edelbrock Performer MPFI kit, Edelbrock cam, MSD 6AL box, headers, electric cut-out and other bolt on's. The transmission that I am swapping into the truck is a T56 6spd from a 94-97 Trans Am/Z28 of the LT1 period, the truck originally had a 700R4 but I kept breaking them so I decided to go with something alot more reliable. I'm lowering it with the Eibach Pro-Truck kit the drop will be a 2/4. I'm planning on Hellwig sway bars upfront and in the rear sometime soon. I will be upgrading to an 18x9 up front and 18x10 in the rear in the summer time but currently I have 275/60R15s Toyo Proxie S/T's on stock rims all the way around. It will have a Auburn Pro Series Differential in it soon also. If there is anything else you guys need to know, ask me. I'm sure I am leaving something out. I am hoping that I can run because I've wanted to do something like this for a while.

As long as you're running a chevy motor in a chevy truck you should be fine with SM class, and since there isn't really anyone in that class I am sure the CP guys would love to have you in their class for some competition...it's really no fun being the only one in class... Hope to see you run with us soon! :f1:

I am not sure what the date is exactly but it is the third Sunday in January (20th maybe?)... We will post the dates very soon.... Also, if it's snowing (sleet, ice..anything unsafe) the event will be cancelled... You can call me the morning of (or Sat evening) to confirm...304-541-5420.

Alright, I will probably wait until the Feb. event so I will have more time to prep. I have a few other friends that are interested in wanting to run from my area also that may follow me down. One is a stock 93 Pontiac Firebird Formula and the other is a well built 90 Eagle Talon AWD with about 400hp. What time is it best to be there to get registered in and teched and whatnot.

Excellent! I'd come down about 9am at the latest so you guys have time to register, tech and prep your cars... we generally start the first car around 10am or shortly after. For your first event I'd come down a bit earlier so you have time to get ready and meet some of our members...we're one big "happy for the most part" family and I am sure you'll fit right in! :partay:
